BCRC elects new leadership

June 18, 2018

Calgary, AB - The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) is pleased to announce that Ryan Beierbach and Matt Bowman were elected by acclamation as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, at the 2018 annual BCRC meeting in Calgary, AB. Beierbach takes over from Bryan Thiessen of Alberta who chaired from 2016-2018.

Ryan Beierbach and his wife Tania ranch near Whitewood, Saskatchewan. They operate a Black Angus based cow-calf operation and a Ranch Supply and Tack store. Ryan and Tania are very committed to improving the environment and increasing the sustainability of their operation. Beierbach is the Past Chair of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association and a graduate of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Mentorship Program. He currently sits on the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) council.

Matt Bowman and his wife Elaine farm near Thornloe, Ontario. They operate a Charolais based cow-calf operation and grow oats, wheat, barley, canola and strawberries. Bowman is the Past President of the Beef Farmers of Ontario.

The BCRC also welcomed newly appointed members Garth Porteous (AB), Graeme Finn (AB), Fred Lozeman (AB) and Dean Manning (Atlantic). They join Dave Zehnder (BC), Chris Israelson (AB), Michael Spratt (SK), Larry Wegner (MB) and Rob Lipsett (ON). Another representative of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association will soon be appointed.

The Council thanks departing members Bryan Thiessen (AB), Tim Oleksyn (SK), Melanie Wowk (AB), Darren Bevans (AB) and Nathan Phinney (Atlantic) for their commitment and valuable input over the years.

The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) members are beef producers that represent and are appointed by each of the provincial organizations of beef producers that allocate part of the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off to research. The number of members from each province is proportional to the amount of provincial allocation to research.
